The roof covering (s'chach) is the critical part of a sukkah -- it must be of
plant material and provide more shade than sun, but not block out the stars.
The Sukkah
Project™ kits provide a roof support system of wooden or bamboo roof slats designed to be
covered with greenery gathered locally (branches, cornstalks, reeds, shrub prunings, etc).
Another option is the use of bamboo mats made specifically for this purpose.
We offer these in several modular sizes (4x8,
6x8, 8x8, 8x12, 6x12, 5x10, 5x12, 6x10, 8x10), which can be combined to cover any size Sukkah.
The table below indicates the mat sizes used to cover sukkahs of different
dimensions.
The mats are made of bamboo slats with a bamboo pole woven in every foot or so
to provide extra stability. Our mats are woven with durable, weatherproof
MONOFILAMENT, as specified in the psak of Rabbi Moshe Heinemann of STAR-K
http://www.star-k.org/cons-seasonal-schach.htm. With proper care you can
expect mats to provide 10 or more years of use.
Our mats are produced
exclusively for use as sukkah roofing (s'chach), and carry a Certification of
Kashrut from BLUE RIBBON KOSHER (RABBI BARUCH MEIR CLEIN)
